Expectations

4 stars

By Jo Caird | Published 18 August 2010

Two couples, one Swedish, one English, must face the news that their baby will be disabled. Based on the first-hand experience of the playwright and director (themselves a couple) bringing up a daughter with a rare chromosome disorder, this play explores highly emotive issues. It does so, however, with great sensitivity and gently tempers the families' tragedies with a bittersweet humour that saves the piece from melancholy. The four actors, who include the writer and director, all give assured performances and the simultanous portrayal of the two stories is not just poignant, but dramatically effective.
