2007, is set to be the busiest year for the arts in Edinburgh. The four-year-old Edinburgh Arts Festival, which runs from 26th July to 2nd September is much younger than its fellow Book and Film Festivals. However, each year the Festival has grown and developed, and this year, a director, Joanne Brown, has been appointed: ensuring that the visual arts can continue its rapid evolution, reaching the widest audiences, on the international platform the artist and galleries have always been working towards.Browsing through the diary of arts events and shows this Summer the one thing that is apparent is the amount of collaborations both between artists and venues. This provides an exciting narrative for festival-goers to investigate, moving through exhibitions, performances and screenings. It is rare to find a time when often-competing establishments work together. This year the festival really demonstrates the confident and supportive climate for the arts that exists in Edinburgh.
The most renown of these collaborations is the display of the life and work of Picasso: Picasso fired with Passion is at the National Scottish Museum, whilst The Dean Gallery hosts a large collection of his drawings in Picasso on Paper.
Riding alongside the world class stature of Picasso and Warhol, at The RSA, are a strong body of British contemporary artists. Turner Prize winner of 1993, Rachel Whiteread brings her cast sculptures to the Ingleby Gallery for just 10 days, whilst Nathan Coley the Scottish representative nominee for this years Turner Prize, brings new work to the contemporary art gallery doggerfisher.
Away from the commercial gallery, the artist-run organisation, The Collective Gallery has planned an ambitious project, which spans over four festivals. The Comic Book Project combines their own exhibition on Cockburn Street with intriguing off-site events, which bring together all disciplines under the art canopy, blurring the boundaries further between book, film, and performance. The venture showcases the versatility of contemporary visual artists and investigates the stimulating consequences when, artist meets artist.
Tipped to be one of the highlights this year is Jardins Publics: A Festival commission of three major international artists, developed by curator Katrina Brown. Taking inspiration from a city, which is more garden and green than any other, the artist will locate their public projects in the heart of Edinburgh.
Whilst the Edinburgh Festival has always been home to International talent during August; the Annuale, run in conjunction with the artist run gallery the Embassy presents an eclectic mix of local talent often exhibiting for the first time to a wider audience. These smaller, younger shows strune across the city form somewhat of a treasure hunt. With Annuale map in hand, you can explore, returning to discovering new sights as these exciting initiatives change from week to week.
My advice, would be to not only look for the blockbusting shows that will certainly satisfy the eye, but also to investigate the cities newest venues and one off events that will display the contemporary strength of the visual arts that Edinburgh is becoming known for.
Edinburgh in August is a wild beast of activity, and often making your way through bustle of the Royal Mile can seem like the days achievement. However, through gallery doors, or when navigating your path to one of the many public works, you can find yourself somewhere else, that doesn’t feel quite like the city you arrived in.
