Well I’m here. And can’t believe it. It’s really sunny. One of the things that I wasn’t looking forward to was the Scottish weather and the haar. But it’s almost balmy up here today. I’ve got a day off before our first show tomorrow. The tech yesterday was ok. I thought that four hours sounded like a really huge amount of time but it flew by. We barely got the screen up and the props out of their bubble wrap. I’m not totally sure what I’m going to do today. I could rehearse I guess, but I don’t know. I’ve brought my bike up with me. I’ve never done that before. I’m quite excited. I could go for a ride on that. I really want to go and cycle over the forth road bridge, which I’d read about in The Guardian ’s ‘cycling special’ supplement. It’s supposed to be an amazing thing to do. But I think I might do that next week.
The train journey was ok. I think I really wanted to fly but I knew that some of my friends would tell me off if I did, so I’ll try and save some of my flying credits for somewhere else. Maybe Greece or Spain. Or America. Anyway, the train was packed. I got a seat to somewhere called Renford, I think. But then I had to give it up to someone else who had reserved it from there. I then sat next to a toilet in the corridor for a while, where I ate my lunch. But then later on, I got a seat again. I had my new phone with me. A Nokia N95. It’s got a mp3 player on it. I’ve never had one of those before. My old phone, bought way back in 2002, didn’t have anything. You could get phone calls and text messages and that was it. So it was great being able to have a sort of soundtrack to the passing scenery. I tried to choose things according to our location, so I started off with Air; then Japan played as we went through Newcastle; and Les Negresses Vertes accompanied our final approach to Edinburgh.
I bought a breakfast ciabatta on the train. And two cups of tea. One Earl grey and the other PG Tips. Actually I was a little disappointed because I got a saver ticket, which was just over £100. All the cheaper advanced tickets had gone by the time I’d decided which train I was getting. I got the 1.30pm and I didn’t have a reserved seat. But I’d read about the fact that standard class passengers can use the restaurant car if there’s space (first class passengers have priority). I thought I’d try and sit in there for as long as I can. If I’m not going to fly, then I thought I’d treat myself with a proper dining-car lunch. A friend of mine had told me it’s a really lovely thing to do. They’d done it on a train to Cornwall recently. So I only had a small breakfast. Thought I’d save myself.
It looked really nice as I looked through the window at Kings Cross. All the places were set out with cutlery and china. Napkins. And I noticed that there were a couple of tables that could only seat one person. So I thought I’d probably be in with a chance of getting one of those. "Not many people would choose to eat a posh meal alone," I thought. But when I lost my seat and went searching for another, I passed the trolley-man and asked if there was any space in the restaurant. He said that it wasn’t going to be open on this journey. "Staff shortages," he said.
