"Since I got here to Edinburgh a week ago, I have not been able to stop showing off in front of new people. Not on stage, in real life. You see, I keep meeting brilliant and funny new people here and I get panicky that they won’t want to be friends. So I start showing off. This is out of character for me, I cannot explain it. Maybe it’s because I’m not used to making new friends: stand up is pretty solitary and also I usually don’t meet people that I instantly adore. Now though, that has happened three times in ONE WEEK. I’m out of control. I want to let these people know that we should be best friends forever, that they are the most ace people ever and I will always want to know what they are doing and thinking in their fabulous heads.

Like I said, I hardly ever meet people like that in my day to day life, so when festival time is on, the giddiness of the potential friendship with a mind blowing person takes me over and all I can do is show off. It’s awful: in the past two days, I’ve thrown an orange at dear old friend of mine’s head just to make one of the magic three beings smile. "He’s afraid of fruit you see," I screech and laugh and clutch my new best friend as my lovely old one looks at me in hurt bewilderment. I trash talk things I used to hold close if I find out that my festival crush doesn’t feel the same."Oh, I agree, Beyonce Knowles is a total douchebag." I blurt out the most interesting thing about me in the third conversation, which is way too early to play your trump personality card. I can’t help it though, especially if I feel the object of my obsession’s attention is waning. "So my grandmother looks like Roy Orbison and, as a child, I used to shoplift for her." I’m ashamed of myself, but as the festival continues and I meet evermore wonderful creatures, my showing off will probably progress to an unbearable level."
